Tire cutting

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by tarsh » Sun Aug 11, 2013 10:13 pm

So I'm running the stock Goodyear fortera tires on the stock rims with marks 2.5. No swaybars. Now we are getting ready to have our mudbog(17th) and my brother took the tire cutter to his boggers. So I made a few cuts on mine(wich are extremely warn down) I can't afford new ones at the moment. Want 32s. What's your opinions on this. Yes it is for my daily driver and yes they are my everyday runners

How do they work now that you cut em?
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

They're just "P" rated tires, right? You mean you cut up the tread, right, not went deeper in the grooves? Do what you want to the tread, but DO NOT go any deeper on the grooves than stock, on a non-M/T tire!

I didn't plan on going deeper. Just needs a more aggressive tred pattern. They are damn near racing slicks now. But I'm hopeing I can save them fir a bit. I will try and put some pics up tomorrow.

If they are damn near racing slicks, there's not much you can do with them, because if they are only have 3/16" of tread, you can only go 3/16" deep on whatever you cut. You can make the voids bigger, but you can't make them any deeper than they are now.

Aside from getting practice with the hot knife, you're really not accomplishing anything on a tire that worn down.

I know but its gotta do something. I mean they are bad, but not actually "racing slicks" status yet. But I will post up photos if the site will let me

On what? You might turn them into paddles in the mud, but they will not be a good simulation of mud tires with self-cleaning lugs. I would not take those things into mud. Depending on what the bottom of the mud pit is, you might bite on rocks. But if it's bottomless mud, I just gotta ask why do it at all? What kind of fun is it going to be cleaning up from the mess?

I need new ones anyway so y not try it. We don't hit to much mud around here. Besides our mudbog on the 17th we just hit the powerlines and the trails nextdoor.hillclimbs. a river and some weedy hills. Small rocks. Nothing major. But its still fun to get in a line and go.

Just because it looks different doesn't mean it will perform differently. If you're seriously at 3/16s tread, the trail is going to laugh at your tires, cut or not. You MIGHT get lucky once and awhile and have one of the remaining lugs catch a rock and grip. However passenger rated tires are so soft that you'll most likely just tear the lug.

Those tires street manners are now officially terrible, guaranteed. I wouldn't run them much past 30mph. People don't generally cut tires that will ever see street time.

Go buy some new tires and leave the hot knife for some worn out Boggers next time.

Edit: I see you've only destroyed one tire so far. But, you started doing this without being able to afford real replacements. Put your spare on and save some money up. CL has used tires all the time.

Because the consensus from over hundreds of years worth of collected driving and vehicle ownership experience here is that it's a dumb, risky idea with no possible upside. If you can't afford new or even better used tires, it's a BAD IDEA to mess with the ones you have.

If you can't afford tires, you also can't afford to break anything offroading it either.

Sorry to be harsh, but this is reality. You need to not risk breaking stuff you can't fix.

dvanbramer88 had tires with more tread than you do and he was having significant issues getting up loose gravely hills. When your tires are to the point they sound like they are at your standing a pretty serious chance of a negative outcome.

Save up for some tires, even if they're used tires with better tread you'll be ahead of the game.

Loved ones who complain when you do something to improve their safety and the safety of the public are just being short-sighted. I used to market all SORTS of mods to the Roadiemobile as "safety improvements". Mrs. Roadie only told me years later she was seldom fooled, and just played along with me to shut me up.

That's some logic for you.... Yes you can take route that your tires are unsafe and need new ones but from sound of it you are already there with there current state with out cutting them. Do yourself and you family a favor and not risk your life in this endeavor.

True story. And you can forget about wet grass too.
