Rage Roof rack

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by hobbstisdaman » Mon Apr 30, 2012 4:03 pm

Looking around online to try and find something cheaper than the baja rack ($325). i saw a Tacoma driving around with a "rage" looked it up http://www.ragepowersports.com/cargo-products/vehicle-roof-basket/ and found that it is pretty cheap. It also mounts right to our factory crossbars(even though they are crap). I could find it for like 180 with fairing and Shipping. Has anyone owned this? how well does it hold up. Just curious

I've got one too. have to watch the bolts cause they seem to loosen up a bit. I also put some rubber in between the mount and the crossbar so the rack would grab the bar better. After I retightened a few times I didn't have any problems. I carry at least a 32" spare up there all the time.

Jason, you have a 32" spare on top of the factory roof rack cross bars?

Seems like that'd be too much weight on those plastic crossbars

I have a vision of someone slamming on brakes in front of him and him stopping and a roof rack with a 32 inch tire getting propelled through the air!

Whewwww.... I wouldn't suggest anyone doing that. Just because they didn't snap doesn't mean they won't. Those stock bars are just plastic at the ends and sag greatly under weight. I wouldn't trust them at all.

While I do agree that they're not as strong as aluminum tubes or anything, IIRC, the stock bars are rated for 300# from the factory...

Factory states 200 or 220 lbs as load capacity depending on which owners manual

Sounds right... I knew it was well over 100#, but don't remember the specific number...

I just know that I had loaded mine down with two jerry cans and some other camping equipment before I switched to aluminum bars, and the plastic ends were bent down so badly that I didn't feel safe driving around the block - certainly wouldn't feel safe taking a load like that off-road where the dynamic loads are much higher. But I tend to over-design things.

Must have been a good load. My bars are fine after wheeling w tire up there.

I did switch after a few months so i could mount more up there and utilize the roof better.

PRECISELY the thought that made me relocate my HiLift off the side of my roof rack and onto the bumper light hoop. HiLift bracketry would be no match for the 3-10G deceleration impact of a good hit.
