Nothing wrong with cutting this one up, and using it for size, tacking it back together where you need. Makes it easier to get real dimensions, etc...

Here's a little update. I smoothed out all the parts on my frame that I need to allow my tank to fit.
Image

I did a fit test and I'll need to shave the bolt head from my bumper. Just a temp thing for now till I make my steel bumper.
Image

Here is my tank cut in half. I also cut out the fill neck so I can turn it 90 degrees and mount it closer to the edge.
Image

A question for you experts; is there a check valve in the filler tube as shown? If not then lets say hypothetically you had had suction cup tires and you were climbing a vertical wall. How does all the gas stay in the tank?

If you had cut the fill neck off square it would be easier to weld back on, or are you adding metal there?

There is a check valve in the filler neck on the factory tank.

Ya I have some 12 gauge steel I'll use. I was planning on cutting it square but the angles and such where it was would have made it difficult to weld a "patch" over the hole. There would have been too many big gaps.

Oh and also, the filler neck won't be going back there. I'll be putting it closer to the edge of the tank.

yeah its actually in the tank part of the neck. Even with the filler neck off, I had to shove a coat hanger into the tank to dump out the fuel.

For the feed, I would cut the part off your original tank that the sending unit drops into and locks. Weld that in so you can use your original pickup and sending unit. You may have to adjust/shorten the down tube and sending unit lever but it may be doable, then you don't have to worry about comunication problems with other pumps to our comp.

fishsticks, you think that'll work? I'd like to use stock unit and sensors and evap. When I get a chance I'm going to drop my tank and remove sending unit and try it in my new tank.

Their website says it's not soluble in gasoline... I don't know if it would work.

I DO know it would be ghetto...

even if it did I wouldn't be confident it would hold with any flexing of the tank.

Just a new update. Today I dropped my stock tank and took some things apart and this is what I found:

My stock sending unit is much bigger than the 44 gal's
Image

There are five parts that I will need to transfer over to my new tank.
Image

One idea I had for this is to cut them out like this and bolt them one:
Image

I also disassembled the sending unti/fuel pump to see what I can do to lengthen it.
Image
The stock unit is 8" tall but I will need it to be 13" tall.

I have a few options for this, I can try and find a taller unit that will be the same diameter as the stock unit or I can modify my stock sending unit. To make it taller I'd have to make the two shafts with the springs longer. Or another idea I leaning more towards is making the sending unit and the fuel pump two seperate units. I'd cut the two shafts with springs like so:
Image
The fuel pump I would bolt to the bottom of the new tank. One of the shafts with spring is just for support and holds the sending unit and fuel pump together. The other shaft is a return line; for this I could attach a hose to fill the gap. The tube from the pump to the outlet tube is long enough and wouldn't need anything further. The wires for the fuel level sensor is an easy one, just make them longer.

Does anyone know what this thing does? I'm assuming its for EVAP...
Image

As far as my new tank: I have the notch for the frame all welded up. Just need to weld the two halves together.

Bottom pic is the charcoal canister. You'll want that unless you enjoy staring at the check engine light.
