Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Possible group buy. Rock Sliders from Trail Gear

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by bobbyblaze » Fri Oct 02, 2009 6:07 pm

I need a number of people who are interested in a possible group buy for Trail Gear Inc. Rock Sliders http://www.trail-gear.com/rocksliders.html
These are unfinished weld on sliders. The arms are not attached so you can set the angle and frame placement how you like.

I talked to their sales dept today. I have to email the sales manager by sun night to try to get group buy pricing on them. I am banking on him being interested in seeing his sliders mounted on a few trailvoys for possible future sales. Just need a tenative count. ALSO, To save on shipping, all sliders should be shipped together to one location (someone in Deleware, NJ, Phila area?). Otherwise they charge a flat rate of $71.00 for each of the 67 inch ones.

Prices for these things are pretty good before a possible group buy IMO.

Rock Sliders - 58" Shortbed/4Runner, $135, pair, 120001-1-K
Rock Sliders - 67" 84-88 Xtra-Cab, $140, pair, 120002-1-K
Rock Sliders - 78" 88-04 Xtra-Cab, $145, pair, 120003-1-K

I am getting the 67" ones. Looking at it with a tape measure, 78" seems to be a little tight.

Also getting the gusset kit for an extra $19.00.
Rock Slider Mounting 6 leg Kit $19, 120007-1-K

Just so you know there is a guy on eBay selling the Trailgear sliders for $140 plus only $20 shipping. He lets you make a bid and the lowest he will go is $130 so you can get them for $150 total. That'll prob be cheaper than any deal you can get from them, just b/c shipping is sooo much from them.

I believe his name is Jratt or somethin to that extent... just look up '4runner sliders' he should show up.

Thats who i got mine from..

And the 78"ers are close but for me they are going to do the job just fine. Personally I'd rather have em longer than shorter. And all it would take to make em a couple inches shorter would be to cut 3/4" off each end and put on a new end plate...

But keep in mind your rocker panel will have to go if you want them on at that length. Thats why I flipped mine to clear the flared ends.

I'm thinking on going with the 78's myself, Bob, as well as a gusset kit. See what kind of deal they can make for us... the eBay deal might end up being our best bet...

Janesy86, Thanks for the heads-up !!!! I just seen the pic of your sliders. Looks good with the 78". Think i'm goin with you and mario with the longer ones flipped over. I will try to get a good deal with them but $150 shipped sounds real sweet. . . as long as they are the real deal, made with 1035 steel like trail gear advertises. I'm guessing they re-list them after they sell a set. Have you gotten a chance to test them yet ?

Mario,
I'm still down for a trade. Install for wheels ? HMMM ???
You'll be sliding in style ! Bobbyblaze style :puker:

Just looked at that guys ebay site and sliders. There is one big difference between the sliders on ebay and their web store. The type of steel.

The tubing they are selling on ebay is made of HREW tubing. The ones on their store is made of DOM tubing. From what I understand, DOM is nearly twice as strong as HREW and dosen't have a seam like hot rolled HREW.

How much of a difference will that make to our welded on sliders ? I don't know for sure. Gonna save $ from their ebay site but at what cost ?

Any one have any input on the steel types ?

Here's some info about DOM tubing I got from Arcelor Mittal steel's web site. The particular strength DOM Trailgear is advertising is 1035. That's nearly the strongest they manufacture. The first four digit numbers are the SAE steel grades. 1035

ArcelorMittals’ DOM (Drawn
Over Mandrel) mechanical
tubing is manufactured to
ASTM Specification A513.
This product has tensile properties
that are comparable to
cold-drawn seamless steel
tubing of the same steel
analysis and nominal size. In
addition, the DOM tubing has
superior concentricity and a
high degree of uniformity in
wall thickness. This is not
necessarily true of seamless
tubing, because starting shell
dimensions are not as consistent.
If standard 1020 or 1026
DOM tubing does not meet
the strength or toughness
requirements for an application,
our TuffDOM® tubing
may be recommended.
Greater strength may also be
obtained by the use of DOM
tubing with heavier walls.

IMHO,you're not saving enough money with the ebay option to justify trading off durability... What's $30 or so when you're buying a ~$200 item?

I don't think there is any difference in the sliders between the places...so I personally think someone is misrepresenting their product. At least thats what I think. The sliders I got came in a Trailgear box, so idk.

I doubt they make them for other distibutors in different material.

And I have read sooo many different threads about this topic. So evenn if they are HREW they should be still fine. DOM is much tougher but HREW will do the job.

So you guys have to decide obviously. I personally think these will be fine for me.

Whoops sorry, I must have been looking up some other site when I got that info.... now if I could only remember which one... damn... I'll edit that post.

Although, if you look at their dealers page, they may be able to order them in for you and save on shipping... just maybe.

-edit: It's CBI offroad Fab that does the Fastenal shipping deal fyi.... not this site... though I think they offer 4runner sliders as well.

I think only the 58" sliders from them and Trailgear are the only ones that are DOM tubing... I've looked at a few different places.

I will call Trailgear monday. Got some questions for them. This is from their web site "Note: All weld-on rock slider are 100% 1035 DOM tubing".

I will also be checking addictedoffroad.com too

Because i'm gonna' permanently weld these to my TB, I want the strongest steel possible (within financial reason). :mechanic:

Ok, That's four. I'm gonna call them tomorrow and get the skinny on their ebay store prices, shipping and type of steel VS possible group buy pricing and shipping. I will post when I get home from work. (no internet in my work truck :drive: ).

I ordered mine the 29th. $150 delivered. I have requested clarification on what they are made from since I ordered from the ebay seller. I hope to see them soon, cause I want them on this weekend.

Response from ebay guy...Yes these are the same as the trail gear ones. I havent had the time to change them yet. Yes you can lift your 4x4 from the rails with a jack. Thanks Jason Ratcliff
