4WD Binding Up In Turn

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by 06MidnightBlue » Sun Aug 14, 2011 9:28 pm

I was at a local 4x4 area today and was doing fine...having a good time. I came upon an incline that was too steep and rocky from my TB with its current modification level...so when I tried to back down...it almost felt like the front lockers were trying to seize up...the truck would literally slow itself down as if someone was putting their foot on the brake...and it would take a decent amount of gas to get it to move. So I take it outta 4H and put it in 2H and its fine? WTF?!?!? :hissyfit:

Looking at your past posts, it looks like you don't have the G80 rear locker, and front lockers are a very advanced mod, so you must have had a brake or maybe transfer case issue. Do your emergency brakes work well forward and reverse? Serviced the fluids in the diffs and transfer case within the published intervals?

I bought it used about 5 weeks ago...it was a previous dealership loaner. They showed me all the service records. I should mention that it only seemed to happen when I was turning. Once the wheel was straight it seemed to "release"

Why would be turning going backwards down a steep hill? It's not even too good an idea to turn going up!

does your model have traction control? My 06 does and it does some weird things when in low traction situations. the only time I have seen it useful is when going around a curve on a gravel road a little faster than you should, you can't like powerslide around the curve, you can see it kick in and the value. I expect on a snowy road it might have the same effect.

If I am offroading, I turn it off. The hard part to remember is when I turn the TB off and back on I have to disable it again.

What you are referring to is the thing that all 4WD vehicles do when you have a lot of traction and try and turn them when you're in 4WD... They bind up because of the different turning radai of the front and rear wheels, and slip tires on the ground...

now that I think about what Mike said, I think he is right, you mentioned rocky area, if it was high traction and you were in 4wd turning then that would be your issue.

A critical clue. Normal for 4WD with a mostly locked up transfer case. Has nothing to do with lockers in the diffs.

I honestly don't know much about the workings of the 4wd system. I understand the basics but not the details. I had a 98 explorer 4WD and I am pretty sure you could engage the 4wd on the highway without it binding up.

When we test drove my son's jeep a few years back, I remember trying that, whoa big mistake.

with matching gears, straight line on pavement in 4wd should be no problem even with lockers.

With my lockers in 4wd I can't turn, at all. Hydro assist is my planned fix for that.

I can... it's tough on pavement but possible at low speeds. Way to go rack and pinion!

Technically no. I had a 2002 F-350 that had a 10" lift, 38" super swampers, twin turbo, 7" bull stacks, custom front and rear axles with Quaife Posi...I mean the list goes on and on. I actually had to have custom drive-shafts and transfer case made to handle the torque (1482 ft. lbs). That truck was used as a show and drag truck. Before anyone puts me on blast for not off-roading it...you really cant say anything to a truck that weight 7243 pounds and ran 12 seconds flat down the strip. I currently hold the record at my local track for fastest diesel and I dont event own the truck anymore.

So the the TB is my first 4WD that I intend to actually off-road...yes I am new to the off-road "scene"
