Camp Water Heater

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by teebes » Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:23 pm

Don't have time for all the pics and details, but thought I'd give a little tease.

Anyone guess what this contraption is or where it's going

:camping:

Appears to have a pump and temp knobs... so I'm guessing hot water heater for the trailer... :poke:

Awesome!

Hehe. But until he changes the water out in the tanks, you end up stinking worse after a shower than before.

nah, just more clean for the chemicals :viking: Actually, they've been thoroughly flushed of the cleaning solvents, the filter on the other hand :poke:

I'm rather impressed with the unit so far. Of course haven't done anything but drool over it.

Damn, now I'm going to have to sneak the Helton unit past the girl so you aren't the only one with hot water... I'm gonna go with that as opposed to your approach for more of a KISS solution, but then again, you also have a trailer :P

hehe. I hear yea... I'll be interested to see how your setup works out once you're done. Did you decide on storage tank yet?

As it stands now, I'm going to be going with 2 5-gallon drinking water containers in the cargo area...

Image

the plan, however, is to either utilize the spare tire area for a donut tank a la roadie's idea (not the preferred method however) or try and tuck a 10-gallon tank somewhere under the frame rails. I hope to replace the gigantic muffler with something smaller and possibly route the exhaust near the frame rail, maybe giving me enough room for a tank. I'm looking at an ABS tank like this:

Image

Yet another option, and probably the one that will give me the least headache, is to incorporate the water tank/s into a rear storage unit, placing it on the passenger side, having a center and driver's side drawer units, and a shelf on top of all those. That'd allow me easy access to the tank if needed, and would also be the easiest to make.

So in other words, no I have no idea yet what I'm gonna be doing :safe:

You really want to use those cylindrical bottles? :puker: They are just about the least efficient use of space due to the circle and the handle. (even worse would be a sphere...) So unless everything else you are packing is concave, you may want to think of something more rectilinear.

About the most efficient use of space I've found is my 7 gallon Reliance Aqua-tainer (found at wallyworld for cheap).

It probably takes up even less space than the 5-gal office-water jugs do.

Also, don't forget that you will need to put in a breather for any solid container that you use, otherwise backpressure will build in your container.

Good point... the 5 gal containers are more out of me being able to get them for free from work.

But... How much were the Wally world containers? more capacity+smaller size = :)

Backpressure wouldn't be as much of an issue, since the containers would be unsealed and a feeder hose dropped in before use... This is a temporary system, and not used for drinking water after all. I have to get filters and stuff before I do that.

Heck. You're going to have to sneak calling her "the girl" past the girl if you want to live.

I went to Tractor Supply and a mom n po farm store and they had all sorts of water containers. the one i liked was a 8 inch tall rectangle that held 8 gallons I think

Might check out the farm stores.

What's a farm? :finger:

We used to have tons of orange groves, but they got turned into middle-class homes.

No, I know what the motto is... she wants to take pics with the TB, and you'll be seeing her and the truck soon... I just had to ask her if it was okay first :happy whip:

I picked up those aquatainers you guys told me about... $10 a piece at Wally World... I'm very very very pleased with them... Once I finish deciding where to put them, I'll post on my build thread.
