Was another great day on the trails in southern Nevada. The trail we took is the Bitter springs Back country byway. This trail runs thru the muddy mountains on the fringe of the lake mead national recreation area. while this is a stock friendly trail you must have high clearance and 4 wheel drive.
the first portion of the trail runs thru an area called the Huffington pockets. in this area rain water collects and runs down the rocks and pools. this was an area that early pioneers and indians would rely on for water while they traveled. this area also attracts animals including bighorn sheep. Unfortunately non were seen but the land scape can only be described as beautiful. the rocks seem to have every color in them and the sand stone formations that have eroded in very strange ways.
one thru the huffing ton pockets area the land scape quickly changed to a more common desert scrub area as we climbed back down out of the muddy mountains until we approached the main wash that would lead us to the bitter springs. The was was full of very loose and deep gravel. and very high walls. this is not the place you want to be during flash flooding season. as you continue down the wash you start to notice that there are spots where the ground is wet. no visible water but wet soil. you will see this in many places along the wash until you reach the spring with is nothing move then the water being visible yet not at all deep. its seems very out of place in a dry wash.
from there the was brings you to north shore road. this is a paved main road thru the lake mead rec area. we took the road north to rogers springs. again very strange to see this oasis in the middle of the desert. water flows from literally under the mountain into a shallow pond before continuing out towards the lake.
we then continued on to logandale and to the logandale trail system. Logan dale trails offer every type of off roaring you can imagine. there are rock crawling trials, sand trails, tav trails ect.
We played in the sand for about two hours and decided to call it a day as the sun was starting to set. it was a great day with good people and a trip we all will be making again!!!
