I'll second the Windows 7 OS, I've had a Win 8 touch screen laptop for over a year and still can't get used to it. I'm actually on an old win7 laptop right now that that the DVD drive doesn't work and none of the USB drives work (kids broke them) because I would rather use this one than than the Win 8 version.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

I've added a new challenge to my list. Not only to complete the Rubicon in my truck, but also to hike it. Both challenges well eventually be done solo.

Bacon, I'd also look at some of the other all-in-one pcs out there. You can get a decent one for like 500 if I recall. Touch screen is nice, but I'd still like a keyboard if you're typing anything long. But hell, we're all getting better and better at typing with our thumbs on 2in wide keyboards now.

I'm the same. I hate touch screens for typing. I'd love to find a good Toughbook with the touch screen. I used those in the Corps, and they were great. Durable, portable, good battery, easy to use.

All available on Ebay. My Motion Computing M1400 PC Tablet - OEM price $4000 when it first came out for the medical market, I bought my first one for $1200. Now $60-100 on Ebay.

No idea, why the link is so big. Anyways, its called the Wonderbag, new at amazon and its an electric free slow cooker. Looks like its possible to make your own, but anyways its a thought to conserve fuel, minimize downtime for cooking, etc. :camping: Worth checking out. :chef:
The problem with the Trailblazer is, people think you know what you're doing.

Nope. That's the high lift rattling.

And about the wonder bag.... what the Hell? Did you miss the whole "limited space" concept? Lol

I was thinking more along the lines of this.

In all seriousness, though. I have given ample thought to a trailer and I haven't stricken the idea. However; as far as time, money, and necessity goes, i don't think it is the logical choice. Especially since I'll be riding solo, I'm using my passenger space for storage (including front). I've even given thought to removing the front passenger seat, and building a more elaborate storage/office space. I'm probably not going to, though. Just for the flexibility of in case I need to give someone a ride, or a friend/family member flies out to wherever I am to join me on a trip.

Always nice to see you thinking of me, though ;)

Strange as it might be, I'm really having a hard time thinking of a title of my channel and name of this trip.
I was leaning toward "DB Offroad" as a title (aka YouTube channel name) but it's already taken.
For the name of the trip I was wanting to incorporate the following: Expedition, Vagabond, Nomad, Overland, etc. I like Expedition: Nomad but i think it's too similar in structure to Expedition Overland. I've thought of Mission: Expedition ('mission: impossible' play off)

I thought of using the Gaelic word (I'm Irish) for wanderer, traveler, wayfarer... which is Fánaí , siúlóir or Deoraí but I can't pronounce them.

Another good question for you nerds... ehem, i mean, computer enthusiasts.

Computer specs is the topic. How much RAM should I get? I'm only looking to edit videos, general internet use, some file conversion, uploads, etc.

As far as memory goes, I was planning on bringing my 1 Terabyte external hard drive for the big media downloads/storage

I'm looking at this

But a concern i have is whether or not that screen will be big enough. I'm using an old 14" right now and it feels small.

I'm looking at this one, too. 13.3" screen, 4 GB Ram, 160 GB hard drive, running Win7. But it's a bit pricier than I was wanting.

I'd pass on both the Toughbook-CF-18 is a dinosaur with a 10+ year CPU windows 7 and surfing will be a snail. The Toughbook-CF-30 is a dual core which is ok but don't think you be happy editing video with it. I have use one at work and I really thought it was slow with XP and running general office kinda of stuff out in the field ( to be far it did have corporate bloat ware). To edit video you need powerful CPU, beside both screens are small and cf-30 can only 1024x768 pixels.
To give you a idea my hp ELITEBOOK with i7 4 gig of ram can convert a ~10min HD in the gopro studio in about a min.
Personal I don't think you need a toughbook type pc just something with SSD drive. Look for something like this but with a SSD drive.
http://rochester.craigslist.org/sys/4642260032.html I had one of these and it is very fast only con is it will be to big for your stand.

A word of caution when using a mechanical hard drives in various temperatures, mechanical hard drives have a window of operation. For example from a quick Google the Western Digital Scorpio Blue line operating temperature is 32 to 140 deg F. I would think other brands are in this range. Therefore, if during your trip the temperatures drops below freezing and you turn on the pc in the morning (with out letting warm up) to start up your map program or whatever you could, trash the hard drive. I did this once years ago by left my computer bag in my car overnight in the fall. Needless to say, the hard drive shortly after started to get the click of death and I just barely got all my data off before it failed. I believe the MIL-STD 810F standard covers this however on Panasonic web site I only see it noted for shock and vibrations. Reasoning for suggesting a SSD drive in my earlier posts. Don't get me wrong the TB line is great but you don't know if these ebay deals have any old newer HD in them. CF-31's are a much better pc, but still $$$$. :coffee:

Thanks Robert!
What do you think the risk of vibration damage is to a "conventional" laptop rather than a ruggedized one? Also, how about the Durabook line? A bit newer, bigger screen, Durabook D14RM Looks like this is going to be a bigger expense than I anticipated...
Then there is the question of can I just put Win7 in my current laptop and try to get a few more years out of it? it's a Dell Vostro 1400. I've had it since I graduated high school and it still runs strong.

Sorry for so many questions, but computers are not my strong suite.
