It depends highly on where you are, but if you're in many of the unstable nations there, I've read that no firearm is actually a safer way to go when dealing with other humans. There are lots of other factors to consider when over there.
Here's a
really good read to get you in the right mindset for this type of trip:

Funny you should mention this, I read that trip log last week! Amazing story.
Thoughts on an international trip:
I know I'm being a buzzkill here, but somebody has to say it: start smaller. The logistics involved with travelling to another country, let alone planning for visas, vehicle import, supplies, any necessary permits, vaccines, fallback plans, etc, not to mention planning a route in a region in which you have absolutely no travel experience are tremendously daunting.
I'd recommend going with the US or Canadian roadtrip/camping option first. take a weeklong trip, then a couple weeks long trip, then branch out from there. There is a very good reason that most international travel horror stories involved inexperienced people in unfamiliar countries. One does not simply ship one's car across to Australia and drive the whole Outback.
That being said, I am and have been planning a trip from Prudhoe Bay, AK to Ushuaiah, Argentina, for some time now, and will not even think of approaching it until I have gained much more experience in vehicle expeditions and vastly advanced my equipment stockpile.
