I may be wrong but Dirty-Bacon-Down-Under sounds like something from the International Bacon Of The Month Club catalog.......

You should come to Canada my friend! We have unlimited amounts of trails here in Alberta. I know your thinking Canada sucks right now, but the trails are amazing. I think Canada sucks to, but I can't move to the US. If you ever decide to come here, or anyone else on this forum, I've got a room for you.

That can be a seperate trip cuz I dont think it'll be nearly as big a pain in the ass. I'll probably come up there before I travel overseas

This seems like a good starting point in AUS. He uses words like "suicide" and "VERY STEEP" and "Dont even attempt"
I'm sold :woot:

Traveling to Canada would make it international and you might still be able to get a call out for help from roadie. Of course then he may have to farm out the call to AlekG to save your bacon.

The whole getting to Canada is too easy, I mean. I'm not saying the wheeling there is too easy.

that Congo trip was insane I read through about 50 pages (just from the author), that is why I don't plan to ever leave the US except to maybe Canada.

The fish and wild life officers out here usually will come with you just for shits and giggles. Not kidding... There pretty cool about everything. They might have an issue with chevycrew because of his 37`s, but anything 35 and under is cool with them. Ill be going out this weekend, so ill take some good pics for you.

JamesDowning wrote:There's a lot of conversation regarding the firearm aspect when on a 3rd world overland trip. It depends highly on where you are, but if you're in many of the unstable nations there, I've read that no firearm is actually a safer way to go when dealing with other humans. There are lots of other factors to consider when over there.

Here's a really good read to get you in the right mindset for this type of trip: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/t ... o-Kinshasa

Funny you should mention this, I read that trip log last week! Amazing story.

Thoughts on an international trip:

I know I'm being a buzzkill here, but somebody has to say it: start smaller. The logistics involved with travelling to another country, let alone planning for visas, vehicle import, supplies, any necessary permits, vaccines, fallback plans, etc, not to mention planning a route in a region in which you have absolutely no travel experience are tremendously daunting.

I'd recommend going with the US or Canadian roadtrip/camping option first. take a weeklong trip, then a couple weeks long trip, then branch out from there. There is a very good reason that most international travel horror stories involved inexperienced people in unfamiliar countries. One does not simply ship one's car across to Australia and drive the whole Outback.

That being said, I am and have been planning a trip from Prudhoe Bay, AK to Ushuaiah, Argentina, for some time now, and will not even think of approaching it until I have gained much more experience in vehicle expeditions and vastly advanced my equipment stockpile.

Absolutley agreed. That's why this trip isnt planned to happen for at least another 6-7 years. I said I would most likely do Canada first. This thread was meant to be more of a feeler thread as to where people would suggest if they could wheel anywhere.
